Pursue - follow 

Persuade - convince another of your opinion

Destruction - causing so much damage to it that it longer exists

Luxury - something that not a necessity; excessive wealth

Frivolous - not serious in content, attitude, or behavior


Chapter 2

Despondence - feeling hopeless

Bog - wet spongy ground 

Mire - soft wet area of low-lying land that sinks underfoot; 

Scum - a film of impurities that can form on the surface of a liquid

Apprehensions - worries or anxieties

Cowardice - the trait of lacking strength in fear

Venture - something done with an uncertain outcome

Chapter 1
1. How does the man the author dreams of appear in the beginning of the first chapter? What does he look like?
He is dressed in rags with a Book in his hands and a burden on his back. 
 2. What is written on the letter that Evangelist gives this man? What does Evangelist tell this man he must do?
"Flee from the coming wrath!" Walk toward the light, knock on the Gate, and follow the instructions.
3. How do this man's wife, children, and neighbors respond?
They cry after him to return. Some mocked; others threatened.
4. What did Graceless yell as he ran away?
"Life, Life! Eternal Life!" 
5. What things does Christian leave the world to seek? He seeks an inheritance that can never perish, spoil, or fade. 1 Peter 1:4
Chapter 2
  1. What reason does Christian give that he knows that the words of his Book are absolutely true? He says they are true because the book was made by Him Who Cannot Lie.
  2. What are the “things where they are going” and “how are they to be enjoyed”? 

a. An endless kingdom

b. Everlasting life

c. Crowns of glory

d. Shining clothing

e. No more crying or sorrow

f. The company of angels, fellow believers, and martyrs

g. The presence of God and His acceptance


3. Why cannot Christian walk very fast? He cannot walk fast because of the burden on his back. 

4. What happened to Pliable after the Swamp of Despondence? Why? He returned home because “if we make such poor progress at the beginning of our journey, what can we expect between here and our journey’s end?” P12

5. What does the author ask Help and what is Help’s answer? Why has this bog not been repaired so that travelers can be safe? Much effort has been made to fix the place but it cannot be mended. Instead, a safe way has been made for those who will look for it and stay on it.

    

5. Talk about the correlation between Bunyan's life and this allegory. Give out the simple map of Elstow from The Christian Adventure book (p43) and read pages 60-61 from that book.
