4. Review Homework: Pilgrim's Progress, chapters 8 and 9
- Where does Christian spend the night? With whom does he speak there? He spends the night in the palace that the Lord of the Hill built for weary pilgrims. It is for the Family of faith. Besides the porter, he meets Discretion, Prudence Piety, and Charity.
- What does Christian think about when he wants to "conquer his annoyances"? p67 (not be annoyed or grumpy) He thinks about the Cross and looks on his clothes (of righteousness). He also looks at his Document.
- What does Christian hope to see at Mount Zion? He hopes to see alive there the One who was dead on the Cross, and he hopes to get rid of all his annoyances.
- What do we learn about the Lord of the Hill at the Beautiful palace? What had the Lord of the Hill done? p69 He had built that house. He had been a great warrior and had fought with and slain the one who had the power of death but that He hadn’t done it without great danger to himself. He did it by shading a great deal of blood. He did all of this out of a pure love of His country. He loves poor Pilgrims so much that there isn’t anyone like Him. He stripped himself of his glory in order to do this work for the Poor. He made many Pilgrims into princes.
- What does the Family at the palace give Christian before he travels on? They equipped him with sword, shield, helmet, etc. so that he might be “proven effective.” They also give him a loaf of bread, a bottle of wine, an da cluster of raisins.
Chapter 9
- What foul fiend did Christian meet in the Valley of Humiliation? Who is he? He met Apollyon, the angel of the abyss (Rev. 9:11). He was covered with scales like a fish; he had wings like a dragon and feet like a bear. Out of his belly came fire and smoke, and his mouth was of a lion.
- Describe the battle with this foul fiend. The first arrow Christian turned aside with his shield. Other arrows wounded him in his head, his hand, and his foot. Christian resisted bravely and the severe combat lasted for over half a day. Christian’s sword flew out of his hand and Apollyon thought to have beat him, but Christian found his sword and gave Apollyon a mortal wound. Apollyon flew away and Christian didn’t see him again.
- Where did Christian have to go after the Valley of Humiliation? He went to the Valley of the Shadow of Death, a wilderness, a land of deserts and rifts, a land of drought and darkness, a land where no one (except a Christian) passes through and lives. It has hobgoblins, satyrs, and dragons as well as people sitting miserably in irons. Discouraging clouds of confusion hang over this valley. It is completely dreadful and utterly without order. P83
- How did Christian fight the things that he could not fight with his sword? He fought with a weapon called All-Prayer. He cried out, “I will go in the strength of the Lord God,” and the things backed off. He is strengthened by the knowledge that God is with him.

Personal Allegory due in the next class!
Go over HW.
So, for me it could be a bit of a hassle to look through the entire list of vocab words to find the ones I needed for that week, so I revised it to only include the ones I'd need in the future. I'll update it early each week, and take out the words we did last week. It just makes it easier to find the words I need. Here's the link, feel free to use it!
