1. How do relationships and friendships shape our future? Explain how Ponyboy’s friends shaped his life in The Outsiders. Explain how Randy’s friends shaped who he was. Recall a relationship that shaped a character in both Peace Like a River and The Old Man and the Sea. What is a relationship that has shaped your life?

2. How do you think Johnny feels about being a hero in The Outsiders? How does Dally feel about it? Do you think Johnny or Dally would do it all over again? How is Jeremiah a hero in Peace Like a River? How are these books similar and different in their view of heroes?

3. What is S.E. Hinton’s message about innocence in The Outsiders? What is Leif Enger's message about innocence in Peace Like a River? What do these authors use to help us understand their messages? 

4. What do The Outsiders and Peace Like a River have to say about prejudices? Are "things rough all over"? Why do you think the way you do? How did these novels change your view of others?
