Description:  My goal for this class is for students to gain a vision of the beauty and excitement of being a Christian in today’s world through our reading of fable, fantasy, allegory, and myth. We will discuss the cultures and truths behind these stories as we apply the lens of Scripture to encourage and enliven our reading, our writing, and our faith. The books will be read in the order they are listed above. We will use various charts and worksheets given in class to increase our grammar and writing skills as we respond to the literature we read and other personal topics.  Our focus in grammar will come from pages 36-80 of The Grammar Teacher’s Activity-a-Day: 180 Ready-to-Use Lessons to Teach Grammar and Usage, from which I will take the worksheets for the grammar portion of class. You don’t need to own this book, but you can look at the pages on amazon for reference. We will continue our practice of learning punctuation, spelling, and capitalization through a sentence starter at the beginning of each class. We use a three-year rotation of various books, so students can enter as 6th graders and take this class until they are ready for High School Literature and Composition grades 9-10 (English I/II). You can check the class blog (hhlosterlit.blogspot.com) to gain more insight into this class, its literary works, and the grammar lessons.

Description: We will begin this year’s literature journey around the world in India with an allegory about the beauty of stories and then move onto France to visit with a famous author and learn about the story that has inspired the iconic musical, Les Miserables. After trekking in the Brazilian rain forest, we’ll take a trip into the fictional past of China, (through short stories posted online and/or handed out in class) then end our year discovering some beautiful African history and wisdom. Throughout our journey, we will be faithfully applying a Biblical worldview
to encourage and enliven our reading, our writing, and our faith as well as using references from classical literature. The books will be read in the order they are listed above.  Grammar, punctuation, and essay writing will also be covered through handouts and weekly assignments. It is my prayer for these students that they will grow in faith and understand better the breadth, excitement, and wonder of being a Christian in today’s world through these works of literature. Five-paragraph essays, vocabulary tests, weekly journal responses, and other literary projects will be assigned. A two-year rotation of books is incorporated, so your child can take the class two years in a row without repeating information, homework, or tests.  Next year, in 2022-2023, we will focus on American Literature.  You can check the class blog (hhlosterlit.blogspot.com) to gain more insight into this class, its literary works, and the grammar lessons.
